Inmates are used by the administration as a source of free labour. While the administration claims to pay them Rs.5.00 (about 10 cents) for a day's work, interviews with the inmates revealed that they are actually given a few beedi's (small leaves of tobacco rolled together) to smoke. The work can be anything from cleaning up the wards to working the field for crops like coriander and other vegetables. |
