Monastery school girl - Bago (Burma)
Monastery school girl - Bago (Burma) |
Description: |
A few quality schools do exist. However, despite the regime official stance of ?no child left behind?, Burma?s education is two-tiered. On one side, you find under-equipped schools and over-crowded classrooms, the sad symbols of a country where, according to the UNESCO, the state spends on education a seventh of what it spends on the military. To eke out a living, underpaid teachers have no choice but to multiply private tutoring sessions at the expense of their usual classes. Students who can?t afford these extra classes are condemned to lag behind those who can.
On the other side, you have the prestigious establishments, Dagon, Latha, ILBC or The Horizon, who teach mostly to the kids of influential and wealthy families, the only families who can afford high tuition fees and other ?generous donations? required by these schools. These kids are the ones who, once school is over, make the fortune of the evening-class institutes of Yangon and Mandalay. These same kids who, better prepared and connected, make it to the best universities. These same kids who, in a country where the private sector is strictly regulated and nepotism is rampant, capture the few decision and money making jobs available. |
