A night with Burmese artists - Yangon (Burma)
Description: Still, the quality of the work produced in Burma has improved considerably these last few years, under the impulsion of a growing community of young painter. Exhibitions dedicated to Burmese art have multiplied across Asia, launching the careers of rising stars such as Maung Win, Aung Aung, Thank Kiaw Thay, Nunn Nunn, U Soe Moe, Ayo Ke?so many artists who, today, belong to the international art market, and can hope to make a decent living out of their work (picture 16). Susan Anderson, the gallery owner, has been the happy witness of this recent evolution:

?In 2002, you had but a handful of Burmese artists that were making a decent living and exhibited their work abroad. Now, you have two or three handfuls. Art collectors have started to look at Burmese art, and local artists have learned to get in contact with agents and infiltrate the Asian art symposiums. More and more artists find opportunities to go and work abroad. From an island cut from the outside world, Burma has become a peninsula.

The relative isolation from the outside world is both an advantage and an inconvenient. On one hand Burmese artists know little about the latest art trends, but on the other that allows them to remain very pure. They find their inspiration in what?s around them, in their heritage, in this tradition and Buddhist religion that they?re so proud of. For many artists, to create is a true act of devotion.?
